Give me a witty character and I will follow that character wherever she leads. Give me a witty character who loves books and tea as much as I do and you might as well tell my BFF she’s been replaced. Enter Nora Bradford in True to You by Becky Wade.
As librarian in the historical village that she owns, Nora assists others with researching their genealogy. John, an adoptee, procures Nora’s help in finding his biological mother after receiving a medical diagnosis that has left him with questions about his medical history. From the moment they meet, Nora cannot deny her attraction to John. But with John happily dating Allie, Nora tells herself that she is quite content in her singleness, especially after having had her heart broken by her fiancé three years ago. As they embark on their search for John’s mother, neither of them is prepared for the revelations their search will reveal.
I knew with the opening line of this book that I was going to love Nora and I was not disappointed. She is a connoisseur of words and facts. Her home is often described as a bookish cottage and she makes her own teas. She dresses much as I would expect a sixty-something librarian to dress and I adore the fact that she talks like no one I’ve ever met before, using words like indubitable and alas. But what endears me to Nora is her genuineness. She isn’t perfect and she knows it. She struggles with things in which many readers will be able to relate. She laughs easily (even at herself) and loves on those around her.
All of the characters in this book were engaging and the relationships were believable. I’m excited that we’ll get to explore more of the characters in subsequent books!
Becky doesn’t just write a beautiful love story, she incorporates God’s truth throughout the story, reminding the reader of who they are in Christ and that Christ alone is all we need. This is a great book for any reader who enjoys romance with a healthy dose of truth.
